Dr. Alan George, associate provost, Information Systems and Technology and interim dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Waterloo, has joined the board of the Optical Regional Advanced Network of Ontario (ORANO), which owns and operates the ORION ultra high-speed optical research and education network.

George is considered a pioneer in the application of computing in scientific research, having recently won the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society's annual research prize, which recognizes "innovative and exceptional research contributions in an emerging area of applied or industrial mathematics".
