RIM’s ‘World Edition’ BlackBerry comes to Canada
June 29, 2007 - 10:33am Research In Motion Ltd.'s dual-mode GSM/CDMA 8830 "World Edition" BlackBerry is now ready for Canadian consumption. On June 26 and June 28, Bell Mobility and Telus Corp., respectively, said they'd carry the device, which gives users access to both CDMA networks and GSM networks. It's a significant enhancement for business travelers who use Bell's or Telus' CDMA networks for wireless access in Canada. Now they'll be able to make calls on GSM networks abroad - GSM is a more popular mobile standard outside of North America. Alongside the 8830 announcement, Telus said it would expand its global roaming services so users would be able to use the device on more international networks. Controversy about the 8830 preceded the Bell and Telus news. The device was supposed to launch on the carriers' networks earlier this month, according to one report, but RIM recalled it to fix undisclosed problems. |
