JumpTV acquires Latino media portal

Toronto-based provider of international television programming over the Web JumpTV Inc. announced the acquisition of Miami-headquartered Sports International Group LLC last month for an unspecified sum. The US firm owns and operates the www.sportsya.com site, which primarily targets the Spanish-speaking market and boasted nearly 200,000 unique visitors and five million page views in November 2006.

According to a media release announcing the deal, the www.sportsya.com site will be used to promote JumpTV’s existing Latin American and Spanish-language services, which include TV Chile, Colombia’s Caracol TV, and Peru’s América Televisión. In return, those existing channels will push subscribers to pay-per-view, VOD and subscription VOD sporting events on SportsYa.

As part of the agreement, Sports International Group president Daniel Canel will perform contract work for JumpTV in a "long-term professional services agreement."

"We see this acquisition as the ‘coming out’ for our dedicated sports content acquisition strategy at JumpTV," president and CEO Kaleil Isaza Tuzman in the release. The JumpTV release also mentioned plans to maintain a newly implemented marketing alliance between Sports International Group and www.batanga.com, a Miami-based portal which attracted more than 4.5 million unique visitors in August last year and streamed more than 100 million audio tracks and 20 million videos during that same month.
