Canadians get texty

According to the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA), an industry advocacy group, Canadians sent more than 12.1 billion person-to-person text messages in the first quarter of 2010.
In March 2010 alone, text messages totalled nearly 4.2 billion, or approximately 135.4 million messages per day. In addition, there were more than 538 million common short code messages sent and received by Canadian subscribers in the first quarter.
Given present growth rates, Canadians are set to surpass 50 billion text messages in 2010.
The CWTA’s members represents cellular, PCS, messaging, mobile radio, fixed wireless and mobile satellite carriers as well as companies that develop and produce products and services for the industry.
